Oh Anna!

In this post, I’ll be dissecting one of my favorite songs by Dasha: Oh Anna! Anna is her middle name, and she went by the name as a kid. The song is a tribute to her younger self and a call to the inner little girl inside of her to reawaken.

This song caught my attention because -hello- my name is Breanna. I relate to the song, but not in the way that you would think. As a kid, I was pretty shy and reserved. A lot of the childlike qualities she describes actually describe me more now, which I think is beautiful.

Don't know where you got it, but you got the confidence

For flirtin' with the boys in a little cotton dress

That was it, innocent

When I was little, I definitely didn’t have the confidence to flirt with guys. This is a recent development LOL. I could feel embarrassed about this, but it’s the story God has written for me, and I believe it’s largely the reason I still have a childlike innocence about me.

Handmade tickets, puttin' on a show

That livin' room couch was always front row

Didn't know where you were goin'

But, then again, you kinda did

The first two lines of this verse do describe my childhood. My sister, my little cousin, and I would make up dances to One Direction and Selena Gomez songs and perform them for our parents in hopes that they would let us have a sleepover. Are you even a girl if you never did this?

The second two lines of this verse remind me of Bailee and I in high school and college. We didn’t know where we wanted to go to college until junior year of high school, and we didn’t know where we wanted to go to graduate school until senior year of college. But then again, we kinda did know. After visiting TAMU, we were pretty sold on the school & my full-ride scholarship definitely sealed the deal. Then, after volunteering at our local hospital with dietitians who graduated from SFA, once again, we kind of knew we would end up there.

You taught mе that when they talk about you

Damn, you talk it right back

Now I put on an act with a smile and a laugh

Like I don't care, but I do

For me, the reverse is true. When I was little, I used to avoid conflict like the plague. Honestly, I still don’t have conflict with many people outside of my mom and sister. But recently, a situation arose where I heard someone talking about Bailee and I. Bailee was almost in tears, so I marched right in there and “talk[ed] it right back.” Guess my big sister gene came out LOL. This was way out of my comfort zone, but in my opinion, it takes more courage to confront the conflict head-on rather than gossip behind someone’s back.

You wore pigtail braids, never worried 'bout the plan

Didn't do it 'cause you had to, you did it 'cause you can

Take me by the hand

I feel more like a scared little kid

Than I ever did back then

Not gonna lie, I still sleep in pigtail braids when I want my hair to be crimpy the next day, and I’ve lowkey always worried about the plan LOL.

These past eight months of post-grad, I have definitely related to the line “didn’t do it cause [I] had to, [I] did it ‘cause [I] can.” For example, I didn’t HAVE to write blogs, film podcasts, be a Terry Foundation interview panelist, seek new opportunities at my job, start a college + career coaching program, attend a new church, and more, but God gave me the opportunity to do these things, and I’m so glad He did.

And it hit me

You'd be dancin'

'Stead of cryin'

Gettin' everybody on their feet 'cause, girl, you got your dream

Today, my dad hung up my Texas A&M diploma on my wall, and tomorrow I start graduate school. Literally, I got my dream!!

Not gonna lie, I’m a little nervous for grad school, BUT I know without a shadow of a doubt that the Lord led me here. He has sent so many confirmations. Just this week, He sent a girl to our clinic who just graduated from the exact program that we are going into. We exchanged contact information, and now we have yet another mentor in our corner.

As Dasha says in her newest song Like It Like That, “I’ve got a list that goes on and on of all the things” God has done for me. I encourage you to make a list & take one small step towards Him. Watch as He meets you in the mundane.

Love,

Breanna Chavez
